Topics in Physical Oceanography

This course is given at the InterUniversity Institute in Eilat.

* Introduction/motivation
* Derivation of the governing equations
* Surface gravity waves
* Geostrophy
* Ekman Layer

* Linear barotropic waves (Kelvin, Poincare, Rossbi)
* Large scale ocean circulation (Sverdrup transport, Western boundary currents)
* Internal waves
* Instabilities
* Combined rotation and stratification effects, Geostrophic adjustment
* El Nino theories






Classical papers in Earth Sciences
A survey of classical papers in all of the earth sciences, inclduing the Ozone hole, atmospheric Hadley circulation cell, plate tectonics, the age of the earth, glacial cycles, the KT boundary and extinction of the dinosaurs, and more. Participating students will be invited to present some of these papers and lead some of the discussions.




Research methods in oceanography
This course is given at the InterUniversity Institute in Eilat.

Water sampling on board a research vessel using Niskin bottles, continuous temperature profiles and planning and designing an oceanographic station. Salinity and chlorophyll using underwater electronic instruments, measurement of dissolved oxygen, PH, nutrients, chlorophyll and the carbonate system on water that was sampled on a depth profile. Deciphering oceanographic data and composing a report.
